DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: THE GIRL ON THE BEACH
1. The novel is deeply rooted in its coastal setting. How does the ocean function as more than simply a backdrop? In what ways does it become almost a character in the story?

2. The novel presents several different models of motherhood. How do these women define themselves through—or apart from—the children in their lives?

3. Nearly every major character carries some form of guilt. Which character’s guilt seemed justified, and which felt self-imposed? How does guilt distort memory and perception throughout the novel?

4. Several characters arrive at the story carrying wounds that existed long before the central tragedy. How do past experiences shape the choices they make in the present?

5. The relationship between the wealthy family and their nanny raises questions about power, dependence, and trust. How did differences in class affect the relationships between the characters?
